What inspired your characters name?

Each of our characters are important to us. And I spent a long time researching a name before I started. I feel this may help us get to know each other better.

Palomedes was the name of the only black knight (as in not a European) who was on King Arthurs round table. I believe the etimology was that Palo (same French root word for paladin) and medes ( the medes were one of the many Persian kingdoms). But in the arthurian legends he appears as anything from Persian to Moorish to strait up black african.

I liked the idea of finding a name that implies ethnicity, while still allowimg for the melting pot multiracialism the Dark Refuge team has in most of their books.

And I love the knights of the round table. Too bad Lancelot couldn't keep it in his pants and Mordred was a spoiled bastard.

When I was 'pulled' into the space campaign, (ok, 'highly encouraged', lol) I knew I'd be playing counterpoint to Mor'aye'ahn as his sister. We had talked about me being the biologist/botanist to his technology driven self. Lil is jokingly referred to as the 'softer side' of SUARM and FtL(despite her underlying temper -usually aimed at big bro). I knew her name had to convey that as well as the family connection. I had actually toyed with Ros'aye'lyn during the character development stage, but Lil'ye'ahn just sounded better. If you look up flower meanings, the Lily symbolizes purity and refined beauty.....As she was introduced, Lil was very sheltered before she came to space, young and very idealistic.....she's having to grow up quickly, learning to be a diplomat, a warrior, and a leader, and making hard choices.....she's definitely evolving and I'm having a blast playing her.....

Childeen was me playing around with words until something sounded dark refugee...wait that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean, as a vampyr I expected him to use shadow leyas a lot and stuff, which actually never happened.

Blackheart was actually added on after creation as a joke based on how his back story evolved.

My characters current name is a joke on the old prisoner tv show. After much prodding admin saw the show the prisoner and allowed me to make a little in joke.

I may be showing my age here but I always found the Number 2 more compelling than the prisoner himself in that show. And of course the Iconic question it begs in every episode is who does Number 2 work for?

I just hope I will get a chance to show my real name and get a chance to describe it here.

Dprisoner00200
As in Angel D's prisoner 00200 , but I do prefer DP2 as a shortform or the Prisoner

I named my character after an old story character that I used to think about writing about, but never did. Wanted to be able to live him out through DR cause of the way his personality was, of course the fact that the Evil Art Collector class was a big big part of the appeal when I saw it.

Has lots of potential and the only part of my character that isn't mine is the small bit of Mr Tiny, the thought of his personality was appealing to throw a bit of an element in.

I started with the 3 syllable scheme of Mar'un'ga as my character is of that K'ias line. I really didn't have any name from any other source as inspiration I just kindof started with an M and worked around and toyed around with syllables that just sounded right.

Eventually I got to something that sounded similar to the moray eel because it was fitting with the animal nature of the Mar'un'ga masks.

I do however have other characters that have much more interesting names.

I had to come up with Twain's name on the fly when the Admin asked me to play an assassin's guild sniper to test out the character type. Since I love Mark Twain and have a bad habit of creating monosyllabic first names for my characters Twain seemed to work. I got his last name a few weeks later when I had to fill out his back story in game and the Admin was kind enough to let me make him another character's great grand nephew. Bonus points if you can figure out who Twain's related to.

Well, Michael is the greatest of the archangels, which is always awesome. Gilmour comes from David Gilmour, who compositionally was(is) one of my favorite guitarists. And Herbert sounded like a good middle name, and no doubt comes from Frank Herbert of Dune fame, though I can't say I was specifically thinking about it at the time.

Fleetmaster Sanford Deer formerly Sector General Deer was my attempt at makin a character who was less crazy than my Border Wars character. Plan wise I bit a bit off Henry's Yantuk to have the whole clone backups but name was all my own.

Sanford because I was watching old reruns of Sanford and Son when I was coming up with the concept. It was because he was inherenting a garbage dump of a problems from SG Stark (I shake my gat at you Kias). I also can't decide if I like Sandford or Sanford better.

Deer was cuz it sounds sweet n nice. It also made sense to me cuz Hunters are always hunting Deer so it sounds like a play on words. I hoped if I played him "off" enough nobody would figure out all my secret plan cuz a Deer isn't a threat. Or at least a deer doesn't sound threatening.

Then when I spring my trap they see its really a wolf in Deer's clothing.

I had the life-giving Native American themed Kapok tree idea, thought up "choate", but could not think up a name. Enter handy Wikipedia!

Moringa oleifera is the scientific name for a plant which exists in real life. "...Moringa leaves contain more Vitamin A than carrots, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, more Vitamin C than oranges, and more potassium than bananas, and that the protein quality of Moringa leaves rivals that of milk and eggs."

it's a funny story in my gaming group there's an art teacher who was talking to another teacher about a funny story. The teacher was calling up the students families of who she was going to be the teacher of to introduce herself. She got to the name Le-a so naturally she was confused on the pronunciation of that name when she asked the mother of how to pronounce the child's name this was the response she got from the mother: "it's Ledasha the - ain't silent bitch." Now the way the teacher in our group told the story was he first wrote the name Le-a and asked everyone to try to pronounce it as he brought the piece of paper around the room no one could pronounce the name until it came to me and i was tell me it's not Ledasha. So I got the name stuck in my head hell I even name one of my WOW character's Ledasha Razz She's an ubber mage Very Happy

Grand Admiral Sessoren Thei'Gann started out just as an amalgam, with Thei'Gann aimed to sound like thy gone. Then with space 3 I decided it was too long a name so I came up with G.A.S.T.
I like that it kind of has the ring of a S.H.E.I.L.D. or a H.Y.D.R.A. from the comics.

The test of the names are thanks to Su Maehl. He encouraged me to try a few different sub characters so I could express myself better.

Captain Orig as in Captain Original (but captain original sounds ultra lame)

Xec Cex because its a pallindrome with hard sounds

Gootes Macbride nearly got named Gootes MacDonald. Gootes (to sound like got the goods)

Post  GeneralGarminFe Sun Aug 14, 2011 2:40 pm

As far as I can remember, Garmin Fe is not much more then just the combination of random syllables that I arranged and rearranged until they felt right. I was going for a stout fantasy-like name. I like how it turned out.

Though the name itself has little in the way of its origin, the syllables do have inspirational sources. 'Fe' as a syllable is derived from my childhood, where I owned a set of miniature trains, just gifts, no real obsession there. On the side of a number of the train cars I remember reading 'Santa Fe'. Its because of this association that I found 'Fe' to be a reasonable syllable to have stand on its own. The 'Gar' in 'Garmin' implanted itself into my vocabulary of syllables most notably through the character of "Garland' from Final Fantasy, the first. 'Min' has more mundane sources and was simply a nice pairing with 'Gar' as I find the first syllable to be the most important when starting the construction of an original name.

Post  F.KalMarx Mon Aug 15, 2011 10:12 pm

Now that the charade ooc is over I can reveal my nomme de guerra. Obviously F.KalMarx was a play on Faux, or false or fake Kal Marx. When I was taunting the real Cal Marx, I would say the F would also represent Fuck Kal Marx, as in F. Kal Marx I'm in charge now.
(Though he has been such a good sport about it.)

My real character name is Angel D as Prime and Layne Yr knew all along. (TRILAT rules, others drool)

As for Angel D it had two different roots. Both come from how I got into DR. During Border Wars I was part of Henrys home campaign and he kept telling me how much fun he had as Yantuk and how he had this awesome plan to become leader of the Northern Kingdoms. So at first I joined as a fluke.
When his Emperor Yantuk and General Kal Shek of CEN killed each other I asked the DR team if I could step out into my own. After a bit of talking we decided that I could be more than just a Tarrisian Technomancer who was a Baribur, and that I would be a full fledged assistant to the Clockwork Angel Desolation, one of twenty six who were desolations apprentices and ambassadors

During Border wars I had my real characters name but I really like the Jack kerouac road trip novel Desolation Angels, so I asked if our group of apprentices could be called the Angels of Desolation.
The DR team said okay so my character became Angel D.

When i was deciding on which letter angel I had to go with D because Vampire Hunter D was the first Anime I ever saw and without it I wouldn't have gotten into sci fi.

Originally I thought I would become a Clockwork Angel so Angel D made sense. Then I got to play through the most amazing subplot involving Desolation becoming an Avatar of the Creeping Darkness and at the end of Border Wars I was able to win the right to become the next Avatar.

So Angel D isn't who I expected her to become, but the Angels of Desolation were so much fun, that its been a wild ride.

Well, the name Prime just kinda happened. I was working out the details for the various Metatrons, and then it turned out that I would be playing one. Before I came up with a name, Brandon referred to the Metatron I was going to play as the prime Metatron, or somesuch.

I thought about it, and I loved the idea of just taking the name Prime; making it both a name and a title. Considering Prime's painful lack of personal life and rather sudden birth, I thought it appropriate for him to keep the title Prime after he was reborn.

Before that, I was playing Kal'Shek. He was literally an out-of-the-box technomancer who I played at Running Gag (the kick off of the border wars). Kal'Sheck seemed an appropriate name, having just enough eastern influence and consonants to seem exotic and fun to say.

When creating my "pirate", I wanted a name that could be definable as "Earther", but have a slightly different twist. I also wanted a name that, written, would be genderless but as its sounded out throw people off. I was conceptualizing in my head what social norms would be thousands of years in the future, specifically where genetics are easily manipulated.

Thus gender norms as we envision them today would be completely different and, in most cases, unnecessary. So, on some level, I wanted a name that when played into our current social conventions would be either funny or "off", and yet thousands of years from now would be irrelevant.

To quote Captain Jack, "you humans and your silly classifications" (or something like that, the word he used may have been labels).

Hence the play of "Su" vs. "Sue". Had I used any other name, I don't think anyone would have gotten it. Plus, I was hoping to have a moment where I can get on a soap box and rip into preconcieved notions of gender. Of course, the only time it came into play I never got to role play that out. Sad

Maehl (only one syllable folks!) is a play against Su, sounding close enough to "Male" but with a more gutteral (as I say it) tone to it. I was originally going to leave it as Mael (as in Maelstrom), but the sound was a little too obvious to me, and I liked the length of the actual word better (5 letters as opposed to only four).

I've had to come up with dozens of names by now, but mostly I like to play with sounds, transliterating foreign sounds to English lettering, reimaging English sounds in writing, and other plays on gender and roles. I.e. I constantly refer to Kendara, a female, as "Kenny", which is a male name. If anyone has a specific request, you can PM me and I'll let you know where the name comes from.
