A Proposal of Joining
Greetings Scientist Gilmour,
This one has heard of your enthusiasm for creating life, watching over its seeding and adaption. One is intrigued by your commitment to biology and evolution. One finds this... attractive.
It is hard to describe the way new Oleifera are created. The term "reproduction" would be misleading, because Oleifera are not simply "produced again". The human method of combining two sets of chromosomes is a mere random mashing together of inherited traits - barely more efficient than their unconscious one-celled choate-parasites.
Creating Oleifera is a delicate, complex, conscious design between two or more Oleifera. We do not "mate", we pool our knowledge, skills and thoughts to create something greater than the sum of its parts. This rapport happens rarely, for many resources are consumed in this process.
Resources are much less of a problem for this one now - with the acquisition of artificial nutrients and lighting, what would take one months or years to complete can now be accomplished in a matter of days or weeks. This one would be more that fit to carry out such a joining.
This one understands that you may have reservations concerning this undertaking, so please do not hurry in your considerations.
May you hold on to what is good, even if it is but a handful of earth.

Re: A Proposal of Joining
Michael appears as he always does, dressed as noted in his introductory profile.
"First, I would like to thank you for reaching out to me in greeting, and I would like to extend the same gesture to you. Things have been somewhat complex for me, though that is not a good excuse for not contacting earlier.
I would prefer not to discuss significant details of my work outside of secure channels. Perhaps we can set something up to that effect later.
Onto the proposal.
What you suggest is interesting, to say the least. I would happily help you in your goal, though you have provided very little in the way of detail- what exactly would be required of me? I do not ask this because I expect to back off if the costs are too high; I ask this because it will affect when I am able to devote myself to this cause."

Re: A Proposal of Joining
"To be perfectly honest, Scientist Gilmour... this one has not attempted such a joining before."
The Oleifera seems slightly... embarrassed, although it is quite difficult for a multi-ton walking rainforest to portray emotions.
"This one assumes, with what little it was told by its elders, that a Joining requires two individuals to form a physical bond though two branch/trunks. This initial connection requires the two to reduce defense choates to a safe level, the equivalent of lessening the human immune system for a brief time. The next step would be to compare genetic information between individuals, decide which genes to pass on and baseline expression levels. Major physiological changes can be made as well, for example, when the weather became significantly colder for many cycles and ice mountains formed, many parents decided to gift their offspring with high-carbohydrate concentration sap to reduce the chance of freezing solid. Having seen how mobile and dexterous these humans are, this one would prefer offspring with such qualities. A smaller size would also be advantageous.
With each generation, Oleifera become more genetically complex. However, it is up to the seedling to discover its hidden wealth of knowledge from both parents.
Depending on how fast this one and Scientist Gilmour could design a new Oleifera, the Joining-process could take a several hours to many days, depending on its complexity. This one would be able to design a delivery system on its own to save time, some sort of capsule to protect against infection is all that would be needed."
The Oleifera shifts its position thoughtfully. "If time is an issue, then perhaps creating a simple Oleifera, designed in a less than a day, would be ideal to test whether a Joining between Oleifera and non-Oleifera would be successful. If it is not, less of Scientist Gilmour's time is wasted. Would this be acceptable?"

Re: A Proposal of Joining
In Michael's next message, he actually seems to betray a faint sense of concern on his face. Or is it disappointment?
"Unfortunately, I do not see myself able to help you in the near future. I had originally assumed that we would need to make physical contact, but your initial description made me hope that would not be required. It seems as if I was mistaken.
At the moment, I am indisposed. I would provide you with the details if you are interested, but I can not divulge that information over insecure communication systems. Sadly, I would greatly prefer you do not visit any of my worlds. They are inhospitable places for any life, to say the least, and I do not want you to come to any risk.
I really hope that I will be able to visit at some point in the future, but so long as the political situation is as volatile as it is, I can not justify leaving. Good luck, and I wish you well in your explorations."
