Twain wiped his brow, the heat was unbearable once the planetary command shut off the vents. He raised the scoped rifle to his eye. He counted two more snipers on the roof of the grey duracrete flophouse. They were dressed like what counted as gang members here on the former pleasure dome of Druzi Prime. He had to suppress a laugh. These gangers would have been used as spare body parts by gangs like the Scarabs back on Refuge. There was something off about how they stood. Too still, then Twain recognized it, the snipers weren't breathing.
Kasanthian vampires, he thought as he switched to more appropriate ammunition.
Even Vamps need to see an attack coming to get out of the way.
They both had an incendiary round lodged in their heart before either even realized there was a counter-sniper on the building across from them. Taking out a small notebook with graph paper, Twain put a pair of marks next to the category labelled undead. Then he activated his radio, "thisistwaingotalltargetsneedtosignalnextphasenow".
Only an A.I. could deconstruct that "statement", luckily Twain had one on his side.
He watched with glee as the Blackheart Security operatives began breaching the buildings at ground level. It was going to be an exciting morning.

Lt. Sobek, a former Lions of Earth merc, and current squad leader of Blackheart Security's breaching team was first through the door of the flophouse. A pair of artificed flash bangs preceded him stunning the Kasanthian Thralls that were waiting inside. As Sobek staked the first with a spike from his autospring rifle, he couldn't help but notice how young the kid was. Not just in age terms in vampire terms too. These gangers must have been turned only a few hours before. They weren't even used to their enhancements yet. Good for us, thought Sobek, last thing he needed right now was to have to chase the gangers through the shadows.
Another ganger leapt at him, not sure if it should be biting him with their fangs or shooting him with the cheap Saturday night special pistol in the Thrall's inexperienced hands.
Sobek bayoneted him through the heart, pinning the young Vamp to the wall while his squad made short work of the rest.
As the smell of burnt undead filled the room, Lt. Sobek said into his walkie talkie, "We just finished clearing out the building. You can move towards the vents now. I repeat, the way is clear."

Lt.cmdr. Deacon Nashik watched the Horned Dog cultists in their red robes as they healed the innocent, quietly checking them for signs of Kasanthian influence. If anyone came up positive he was to have the Brethren under his command escort them to Director Kal Marx's starship for interrogation.
So far those who had been caught were few and far between and had come quietly and without violence much to Deacon's confusion. There had been more violence from a few Brethren Betas who had gotten separated from their squads. The Sector Generals had been clear and none of the unaccountable clones would be allowed back on duty until they were fully tested.
Rumors had already spread to the Betas that the testing was painfull and might end in a bullet. Just the thing to calm the troops down, Deacon thought with frustration.
He had joined the IR to keep people safe from dangerous aliens like Manslayers not to impose quarantines. Suddenly his commlink chirped.
"Good news Lt.cmdr Nashik, the vents have been cleared by Blackheart. All gangers are accounted for. However seismic scans are picking up a tunnel drilled by the insurgents into some sort of burial chamber,"said the voice of his superior,"Quarantine remains in effect. Keep your troops ready,we already have reports of alien hieroglyphics and statues down there."
Tapping his comm Deacon replied, "Sir any idea what we are facing down there?"
"Officially no... but internal security let it slip it might be a Nightmare Lord."
"A what?"
"It's on a need to know basis and you don't need to know," replied the voice from his comm, "Just keep the food and medicine flowing to the people. We don't want panic setting in."
Deacon heard the hard edge in his superior's voice, and knew not to ask more questions.
